One jar, and the kit that belongs with it
Doughkeep exists because keeping a sourdough starter is easy once you can see what it is doing, and needlessly frustrating when you cannot. Everything we sell serves that one idea.
The catalogue is one product in two sets. A 900 ml glass jar, graduated from 100 to 900 ml, with a wooden lid, a stick-on thermometer strip, a silicone spatula, breathable cloth covers, elastic feeding bands, chalk labels and an erasable pen. The Complete Set adds a five-piece measuring spoon set and doubles the consumables. That is the whole shop.
A short catalogue is a choice. It means every page on this site is about the same object, every specification is published with its source, and every review is from someone who bought the thing you are looking at. It also means we can afford to write properly about a jar — which sounds like a small subject until you have spent two weeks wondering whether your starter is alive.
Why this jar
Because a starter communicates entirely through the side of its container, and most containers say nothing. The two measurements that decide everything — how far it rose, and how warm it is sitting — are invisible in a plain jar, and reading them off a printed scale and a thermometer strip changes the experience completely.
The rest of the design follows from that. Straight walls, so a spatula takes the whole side down and the glass stays clear enough to read. A wide mouth at 3.9 in, so scraping is quick enough to become habit. A lid that rests rather than seals, so carbon dioxide leaves and condensation does not fog the scale. Each of those is a small decision, and together they are the difference between a jar you read at a glance and one you have to open.
How we work
Every specification on this site is published with the sheet it comes from, and every figure that is a calculation shows its arithmetic. The rating comes from verified buyers of this jar, and the written reviews are on the reviews page.
Our writing is signed. Nora Whitfield has kept a rye starter since 2016 and writes every guide here — our standards set out what a jar has to satisfy and where each number comes from.
Orders ship free, dispatched within 1 to 2 business days and arriving in 6 to 10. Returns are free for 30 days. If something is wrong with yours, tell us and we will put it right.
